Online Gambling
Online gambling has become much more popular in recent years, especially among young adults. With this rise in popularity, there has been an increasing number of gambling sites available and more advertisements promoting these sites.
Some Manitobans may not realize that most of those gambling sites are not regulated in Manitoba. Some may also be unsure of the purpose of regulation and why it matters.
Regulation gives gambling sites licences to operate and makes sure they follow the laws of the province/state or country where they’re licensed. However, each site only has to follow the laws of the place that licenses it — if they have a licence at all. That means if a site isn’t regulated in Manitoba, the LGCA can’t make them follow Manitoba’s laws. That could mean trouble if a player were to have a problem with an unregulated site, such as not being paid out on a win.
This campaign aims to help Manitobans understand the risks of using unregulated gambling sites. It provides clear information so people can make informed choices about where and how they gamble online and reduce their chance of experiencing harm. It also explains what to look for to know if a site is regulated in Manitoba or not.

The LGCA’s research found that people aged 18-24, especially males, are at higher risk of experiencing gambling harm. About 22% of Canadians in this age group reported higher-risk gambling behaviour (e.g., placing large bets). They are also more likely to report using unregulated gambling sites. Some also believe unregulated sites offer better odds, bigger payouts, or more betting options, which can make them more appealing than a regulated site.

The LGCA's public education campaigns encourage lower-risk alcohol and cannabis consumption and gambling participation. Campaigns run in English and French across the province via a mix of traditional out-of-home, digital and social media.
